Soviet forces have occupied the famine-ravaged village of Hermakivka. Viktor must guard those dearest to him against libertine Nazi spies—'stragglers'—who wreak death and destruction upon the innocent. Yet he must confront a greater terror: The Shadow—the malignant spirit that masks reality and threatens to govern his soul.
