Grisham earned a degree in accounting from Mississippi State University and a Juris Doctor degree in 1981 from the University of Mississippi. While working in private practice, where he specialized in criminal and personal injury law, and serving in the Mississippi House of Representatives, John Grisham discovered his passion for writing and began working on his first novel. Grisham's legal knowledge and experience heavily influenced his writing. His legal thrillers are praised for their accuracy and attention to detail in procedures, terminology, and legal concepts, a testament to his expertise and commitment to research. A turning point in his writing career came in 1989 with his debut novel, A Time to Kill, where a young lawyer defends a black man accused of murdering two white men in the Deep South. Although not an immediate success, it eventually received critical acclaim and garnered a dedicated fan base. Grisham's second novel, The Firm, catapulted him to literary stardom. It focuses on a young lawyer who discovers his prestigious law firm's involvement in criminal activities. His suspenseful plots and legal expertise captivated readers and solidified his reputation as a master of the legal thriller genre.

Grisham continued to write legal thrillers, with some of his most popular novels including The Pelican Brief, The Client, and The Runaway Jury. His writing career extended beyond legal thrillers and showcased his versatility with novels like A Painted House and Skipping Christmas. Grisham's novels have inspired several successful screen adaptations, such as The Firm starring Tom Cruise, which grossed over $270 million worldwide and earned critical acclaim.
