Grisham earned a degree in accounting from Mississippi State University and a Juris Doctor degree in 1981 from the University of Mississippi. While working in private practice, where he specialized in criminal and personal injury law, and serving in the Mississippi House of Representatives, John Grisham discovered his passion for writing and began working on his first novel. It focuses on a young lawyer who discovers his prestigious law firm's involvement in criminal activities. His suspenseful plots and legal expertise captivated readers and solidified his reputation as a master of the legal thriller genre.

Grisham continued to write legal thrillers, with some of his most popular novels including The Pelican Brief, The Client, and The Runaway Jury.
