本教材根据教育部制订的“现代汉语教学大纲”编写，分绪论、语音、文字、词汇、语法、修辞六章，是迄今为止唯一一套着力解决国内多数高校现代汉语课程容量与课时量不相匹配这一突出问题的教材。教材主体内容分为两个部分，前一部分是现代汉语课程最基础、最核心的内容，便于师生在有限的课时内教授和掌握系统的现代汉语知识；后一部分是“课程延伸内容”，供课时充裕的情况下全讲或选讲，以满足各类院校对现代汉语课程教学安排的不同需求。前一部分配有“复习与练习”，复习题用来巩固所学的知识要点，练习题重在训练分析语言事实、解决具体问题的能力。多数“课程延伸内容”附有“思考与讨论”，供有兴趣的学习者深入思考，拓宽视野。本教材是黄伯荣先生半个多世纪以来编写各类现代汉语讲义、教材经验的结晶，融汇了黄伯荣先生母校中山大学及相关院校教师的研究实力和教学智慧，是一本既注重系统性和科学性，又强调简明性和实用性的全新现代汉语教材。
