About

Ian Fleming (1908 – 1964) was a British writer best known for his series of spy novels featuring the character James Bond, the first of which, Casino Royale, was published in 1952. Many films have been made based on Fleming's novels as well as original screenplays about the James Bond charactRead moreer.

While the character of Bond works in Britain's Secret Intelligence Service (known as MI6) Fleming himself was a naval intelligence officer in WWII. He based the James Bond character on several people he got to know at this time, but added a number of literary flourishes and some of the author's own tastes. For the character's name, it's widely believed Fleming borrowed it from an American ornithologist of the Caribbean named James Bond.

Fleming was appointed to run an intelligence framework in Spain through 1941-42 in case German forces overtook the territory: this was called Operation Goldeneye. The 1995 James Bond film Goldeneye, which is not based on any of Fleming's novels, takes its name from Fleming's Jamaican "Goldeneye" estate, where he wrote many of the Bond novels. As is now commonly the practice among contemporary writers of thriller novels in series such as Kathy Reichs and Ian Rankin, James Bond doesn't age in Fleming's novels, always appearing to be in his mid-to-late-30s, a few years shy of the MI6 retirement age of 45. After Fleming's death in 1964 a number of other authors have penned Bond novels in cooperation with his estate. John Gardner was the first, and published a series of 16 James Bond novels, including the novelization of the screenplay for Goldeneye. Raymond Benson, Kingsley Amis, Sebastian Faulks, Jeffrey Deaver, and William Boyd have also written novels featuring James Bond.

Fleming is also the author of the children's novel Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang, published several months after his death in 1964, which spawned the 1968 Disney musical movie of the same name.
