About

Janet Evanovich is best known as the author of the bestselling Stephanie Plum series of mystery novels. The first of these, One for the Money, was published in 1994 and subsequent novels have followed with titles following a numerical theme in sequence (i.e. Two for the Money, Three to Get DeadlyRead more, Four to Score, etc).

Janet Evanovich initially set out to be a literary novelist, taking up the craft in her thirties after spending her early adulthood as a homemaker caring for her children, but she was unable to sell any of her early literary manuscripts. She turned her hand to romance novels and found success early on, leading her to write a dozen romance novels under the pseudonym Steffie Hall. She learned through this practice that what she enjoyed most was writing action sequences and funny dialogue with likeable characters, which led her to create the character, Stephanie Plum.

Not wanting to write police procedural crime fiction, Evanovich decided that Stephanie Plum would work as a bounty hunter, a profession she researched by riding along with bond enforcement agents in her town of Trenton, New Jersey. After interjecting several books that take place between the Plum novels (the "between the numbers" books), featuring the character Diesel alongside Plum, Evanovich created the Wicked series which features Diesel centrally.

In addition to the Stephanie Plum series and spinsoffs, Evanovich has written and co-written a number of shorter series. The Fox & O'Hare series was written mostly with screenwriter and producer Lee Goldberg, with later entries crediting as co-authors Evanovich's son Peter Evanovich, and mystery novelist Steve Hamilton. The Knight & Moon series began with Curious Minds which was co-authored by Phoef Sutton, co-author of the third entry in the Wicked series. Other series are the Full series co-authored by Charlotte Hughes the Elsie Hawkins romance novels co-authored by Leanne Banks and Dorien Kelly, and the Barnaby & Hooker series which Evanovich wrote alone. Evanovich had planned to co-write a new series with TV crime drama screenwriter and novelist Stephen J. Cannell for release in 2007, but the project was delayed and Cannell died of cancer in 2010.

Evanovich is known for her work ethic, writing for up to eight hours per day to keep her many projects in progress. She wrote about her process in a 2006 book called How I Write.Read less
