About

Dan Brown is best known as the author of the novel The Da Vinci Code and the other books in his series featuring Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon. Brown was born in 1964 in New Hampshire and was raised on the campus of Phillips Exeter Academy, where his father was employed writing textbooks andRead more teaching mathematics. His mother was a church organist and the family as Brown recalls was very religious, though Brown's curiosity about science led him away from the tenets of his Episcopalian upbringing.

Brown originally pursued a career in music after graduating from Amherst College in 1986. He released a handful of recordings and lived briefly in Los Angeles, but eventually moved back to New Hampshire. After reading Sidney Sheldon's novel The Doomsday Conspiracy in 1993, he decided to try to become a thriller novelist and began writing the manuscript that would become his debut novel Digital Fortress. It was published in 1998. His next two novels, Angels & Demons (featuring the character that Brown would become best known for, Robert Langdon) and Deception Point, followed in 2000 and 2001, but each book performed modestly, not selling more than 10,000 copies.

While he was working on his early thrillers he penned a pair of humour books under the pseudonym Danielle Brown.

In 2003 with the publication of The Da Vinci Code, the sequel to Angels & Demons, Brown became a household name; a year later all four of his novels appeared simultaneously on the New York Times Bestseller list.

Brown's Robert Langdon books are about puzzles embedded in well-known works of art and feature conspiracy theories about the history of Christianity. For that reason, they are considered in some circles to be controversial, and the historical research behind Brown's books has been called into question by numerous scholars.
