About

Sidney Sheldon (February 11, 1917 – January 30, 2007) the "prince of potboilers" often cited as one of the top 10 bestselling fiction writers of all time actually started his writing career as a poet, at age ten, when he was paid $5 for his work.

He rose to prominence in the 193Read more0's, first as a Broadway playwright and then Hollywood screenwriter, winning an Academy Award for best original screenplay in 1948 for The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer. He didn't start writing novels until he was in his 50's, hitting bestseller lists with romantic suspense thrillers such as Master of the Game, The Other Side of Midnight and Rage of Angels. Many of his books were made into movies or TV series.

When television became a hot medium, Sheldon decided to give it a try. He created The Patty Duke Show, and produced and wrote virtually every episode of the series that ran seven years. He went on to write and produce I Dream of Jeannie starring Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman, and Hart to Hart starring Robert Wagner and Stafanie Powers. Sheldon often used pseudonyms because he thought it didn't look quite right to be cited so often as creator, producer, writer and copyright holder of so many series.

Books ultimately became his favourite medium. Movies and television are collaborative media; he liked being able to be on his own and his stories often feature strong women who succeed in hostile male environments. In all, Sheldon wrote 18 novels which have sold more than 300 million copies. He used a lot of the tricks he learned in the movie and TV trade. "I try to write my books so the reader can't put them down," he said. "It's the technique of the old Saturday afternoon serial: leave the guy hanging on the edge of the cliff at the end of the chapter."
