In 1944, Lyonel Feininger (1871–1956) wrote his first letter to fellow painter Mark Tobey (1890–1976) after seeing Tobey's first solo show at the Willard Gallery in New York. It was the beginning of a close friendship that lasted until Feininger's death in 1956. More than eighty letters document the friendship of these two artists.
