This book is the third volume of lecture notes from summer schools held in the small village of Peyresq (France). These lectures cover nonlinear physics in a broad sense. They were given over the period 2004 to 2008. The summer schools were organized by the Institut Non Linéaire de Nice (Nice, France), the Laboratoire de Physique Statistique (ENS Paris, France) and the Institut de Recherche de Physique Hors Equilibre (Marseilles, France). The goal of the book is to provide a high-quality o...

Louis Bachelier's Theory of Speculation
The Origins of Modern Finance
2011
EN
March 29, 1900, is considered by many to be the day mathematical finance was born. On that day a French doctoral student, Louis Bachelier, successfully defended his thesis Théorie de la Spéculation at the Sorbonne. The jury, while noting that the topic was "far away from those usually considered by our candidates," appreciated its high degree of originality. This book provides a new translation, with commentary and background, of Bachelier's seminal work.Bachelier's thesis...
Special Relativity in General Frames
From Particles to Astrophysics
- Series -
- Physics and Astronomy (R0)

Special relativity is the basis of many fields in modern physics: particle physics, quantum field theory, high-energy astrophysics, etc. This theory is presented here by adopting a four-dimensional point of view from the start. An outstanding feature of the book is that it doesn’t restrict itself to inertial frames but considers accelerated and rotating observers. It is thus possible to treat physical effects such as the Thomas precession or the Sagnac effect in a simple yet precise manner...

Novel techniques for modeling 3D cracks and their evolution in solids are presented. Cracks are modeled in terms of signed distance functions (level sets). Stress, strain and displacement field are determined using the extended finite elements method (X-FEM). Non-linear constitutive behavior for the crack tip region are developed within this framework to account for non-linear effect in crack propagation. Applications for static or dynamics case are provided.
Multifractal Analysis in Hydrology
Application to Time Series
2008
EN
Accessible
This book provides a simplified description of the procedures to be used to perform an analysis of hydrological data within a multifractal framework. After a review of multifractal theory and the presentation of one model for identifying scale invariance properties, examples of applications to rainfall and discharge time series are given. It will be of interest to teachers and researchers in this field, both nationally and abroad.

Torsors, also known as principal bundles or principal homogeneous spaces, are ubiquitous in mathematics. The purpose of this book is to present expository lecture notes and cutting-edge research papers on the theory and applications of torsors and étale homotopy, all written from different perspectives by leading experts. Part one of the book contains lecture notes on recent uses of torsors in geometric invariant theory and representation theory, plus an introduction to the étale homotopy ...
Turbulence
The Legacy of A. N. Kolmogorov
1995
EN
This textbook presents a modern account of turbulence, one of the greatest challenges in physics. The state-of-the-art is put into historical perspective five centuries after the first studies of Leonardo and half a century after the first attempt by A. N. Kolmogorov to predict the properties of flow at very high Reynolds numbers. Such 'fully developed turbulence' is ubiquitous in both cosmical and natural environments, in engineering applications and in everyday life. The intended readers...
History of Virtual Work Laws
A History of Mechanics Prospective
- Series -
- Engineering (R0)

EN
The book presents a history of classical mechanics by focusing on issues of equilibrium. The historical point of view adopted here restricts attention to cases where the effectiveness of forces is assessed on the basis of the virtual motion of their points of application. For completeness, hints of the alternative approach are also referred, the Archimedean for ancient mechanics and the Newtonian for modern mechanics. The laws resulting from consideration of virtual motions are named laws ...
Elasticity for Geotechnicians
A Modern Exposition of Kelvin, Boussinesq, Flamant, Cerruti, Melan, and Mindlin Problems
2013
EN
This book deals in a modern manner with a family of named problems from an old and mature subject, classical elasticity. These problems are formulated over either a half or the whole of a linearly elastic and isotropic two- or three-dimensional space, subject to loads concentrated at points or lines. The discussion of each problem begins with a careful examination of the prevailing symmetries, and proceeds with inverting the canonical order, in that it moves from a search for balanced stre...

Our understanding of galaxies, the building blocks of the Universe has advanced significantly in recent years. New observations from ground- and space-based telescopes, the discovery of dark matter, and new insights into its distribution have been instrumental in this. This textbook provides graduate students with a modern introduction to the gravitationally determined structure and evolution of galaxies. Readers will also benefit from detailed discussions of the issues involved in the pro...

So great a change ensued in experimental chemistry, and in theory and nomenclature, and such a mass of facts was coordinated and explained by Lavoisier that he has been justly called "the father of modern chemistry." He was the first to explain definitely, the formation of acids and salts, to enunciate the principle of conservation as set forth by chemical equations, to develop quantitative analysis, gas analysis, and calorimetry, and to create a consistent system of chemical nomenclature....
